Have you been wondering where our cranes went?

A few photos of sandhill crane capture on Ladd Marsh (2015 & 2016) have been added to the “Photos” page under the Sandhill Crane Research tab.  We have also populated the “Maps” page with maps showing our birds’ general movements since fall 2015.  You can check out Cathy’s slide show from her recent research presentation in Tennesee.  “Our” sandhill cranes should be home in the next 3 weeks!  Can’t wait to see our cranes back on the marsh!

First 2017, First Saturday Bird Walk Jan. 7

It’s time for another year of First Saturday Bird Walks on the marsh with Mike.  Tomorrow’s walk leaves Ladd Marsh Headquarters on Pierce Road at 10:00am.  There may be some interesting winter birds to be seen, but be prepared for both cold temperatures and wind.  Don’t forget to pick up your 2017 Oregon Wildlife Area parking permit.  Let’s go birding!  See you on the marsh in 2017!

1st Saturday Bird Walk Nov. 5

This Saturday, Nov. 5 is the first Saturday, which means it’s time for a bird walk with Mike.  So, turn off the election news, grab your binoculars, and head on out to the marsh for a morning of birding with the experts.  The trip will leave from Ladd Marsh Headquarters on Pierce Road at 10:00 AM.  This is the time of year when the south wind really begins to blow, so, as always, dress for the weather.

Thanks Friends!

Thanks to all of our friends who came out last Friday for our annual membership meeting. Board chair Josh Averette presented a slide show with lots of wonderful memories of another beautiful and eventful year on the marsh.  Cathy Nowak shared some exciting news about where “our” cranes are headed for the winter.  And, Karen Antell presented some information about mosquito species that EOU researchers have detected on Ladd Marsh.  If you were unable to attend, don’t forget to renew your membership with the FOLM before the year runs out.  You can download a form from our website and mail it in with a check.  See you on the marsh!

First Saturday Bird Walks

It was a fabulous morning on the marsh today, with enough shorebirds to test our skills, and sunshine to bring out the songbirds, too.  Vaux’s Swifts kept us company wherever we wandered.  The days may be getting shorter, and the temperature cooler, but there are always birds to see on the marsh.  Next month, we’ll move to our winter start time of 10:00 AM.  October starts on a Saturday, so mark you calendar now for our next Friends of Ladd Marsh, First Saturday Bird Walk on October 1, leaving Headquarters at 10:00 AM.  Until then, Good Birding!

Ladd Marsh Bat Night

FOLM presents Bats with Burr. Join Burr Betts and the Friends of Ladd Marsh to learn more about these winged mammals of the night Saturday, August 20 at 8:30 PM. We will gather at a pond on Ladd Marsh across Peach Road from the Fishing Pond; it is about 1 mile north of Highway 203 (the Union Hwy) on Peach Road. We will attempt to catch bats for participants to observe (no handling); we will listen for bat calls with a bat detector and Burr will talk about bats and their life history. Participants please wear clothing appropriate for the weather (remember it can cool significantly after dark) and bring a headlamp and/or flashlight, insect repellant and a chair of you wish to sit while we wait for bats. If the weather is inclement (rainy and/or windy), we will move to Ladd Marsh HQ for an indoor presentation on bats.
